Google Chief Meets Investor: Sundar Pichai and Carl Icahn

Sundar Pichai and Carl Icahn

Sundar Pichai and Carl Icahn have never been partners, never clashed in a boardroom, and have never done a deal together. However, there is one indirect link between them: Motorola Mobility, 2011. Icahn owned about 11% of the shares and pressed it over its patents. Google then bought the firm for $12.5bn when Pichai was the senior vice president of product management for Chrome in May 2011. Use these two names in one headline, and your brain fills in the blanks. But it never happened.

KEY POINTS
  • Pichai has been CEO of Google since 2015 and Alphabet since December 2019.
  • Icahn is 90, still chairs Icahn Enterprises, and helped make shareholder activism mainstream.
  • Motorola is the only spot where they had a connection.
  • Larry Page was Google’s chief executive during those talks. Not Pichai.
  • Since 2023, one man’s gone up, and the other’s gone down in terms of fortune.

Who is Sundar Pichai?

Pichai Sundararajan was born on 10 June 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in Chennai. Wikipedia states that his dad was an electrical engineer at GEC, the British conglomerate, and his mom was a stenographer. He and his brother slept on the living room floor. Two things stick out. The boy could memorise phone numbers from memory like a magic trick.

And the family sat on a government waiting list for five years just to get a landline. When they finally got the connection, the neighbours queued at the door to ring hospitals and relatives. He said that’s why he’s impatient with bureaucracy. He earned a BTech in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1993, receiving a silver medal. Then he did a master’s at Stanford in 1995 and an MBA at Wharton in 2002, where he was a Palmer Scholar. Applied Materials and a stint at McKinsey filled the gap. He joined Google in 2004, the very month Gmail launched. His first project was the Google Toolbar.

Then he argued that Google needed its browser. Chrome launched in 2008 with a grand total of 1% market share after its first year. He stuck with it. Android joined his patch in March 2013. Twitter tried to recruit him in 2011. Microsoft offered him the top job in 2014 before going with Satya Nadella. He also helped in the $3.2bn Nest deal. Became Google chief in October 2015 and Alphabet chief in December 2019. Married to Anjali, whom he met at IIT Kharagpur. Now, they both have two kids and live in Los Altos Hills. Later on, he received the Padma Bhushan in 2022.

Who is Carl Icahn?

Born on 16 February 1936 in Brooklyn, brought up in Far Rockaway, Queens. Dad was a cantor who later taught, and mum was a schoolteacher. He read philosophy at Princeton, graduated in 1957, started medical school at NYU, jacked it in after two years and joined the Army Reserve. Then Wall Street. In 1961, he worked at Dreyfus, then moved to Tessel, Patrick, and finally Gruntal. According to Wikipedia, in 1968, he stumped up $150,000 of his own cash, borrowed $400,000 from his uncle and bought a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.

Tappan was the first scalp in 1978. Forced a sale to Electrolux, doubled his money, and pocketed $2.7m. After that, it snowballed. Phillips Petroleum in 1985, $50m.  TWA, where he took control that same year, bought the lot in 1988, flogged the London routes to American Airlines for $445m in 1991, walked off with $469m and left the airline sitting on $540m of debt. Texaco in 1989, a $700m profit. Then came RJR Nabisco, Marvel, Yahoo, Netflix, eBay, and Apple. On and on. Britannica points out he was accused of greenmail again and again through the eighties. Oliver Stone modelled Gordon Gekko after him. Call him a corporate raider, and he’ll take it as a compliment.

The Connection: Motorola Mobility, 2011

There’s no partnership anywhere in the record. What there is is a patent scrap. Icahn had a history with Motorola. Lost a board election there in 2007 despite owning 3%. Sued them in 2008 while demanding they flog the mobile arm. Motorola Mobility’s SEC merger filing spells out 2011. Google’s Andy Rubin phoned Motorola boss Sanjay Jha in early July, days after rivals hoovered up Nortel’s patents. On 20 and 21 July, Icahn and Daniel Ninivaggi rang Jha. Icahn and his lot held about 11% and wanted the patent portfolio looked at properly. So he didn’t deliver Google. Google was already on the phone.

How $30 Became $40 a Share

Google opened with $30 a share, cash, on 1 August. Icahn rang Jha the next day for a natter about it. The board said no chance and sent the advisers back in. On 9 August, Google jumped to $37, then put $40 in writing hours later. On 14 August, Ninivaggi told the board Icahn would vote yes. Signed the next morning. The deal was for forty dollars a share, roughly $12.5bn, which was a 63% premium on the 12 August close. Icahn called it a “great outcome for ALL shareholders of Motorola Mobility.”

What Happened to Motorola Afterwards

The deal was closed in 2012. Handsets were sold to Lenovo for $2.91bn in January 2014. Looks like Google got fleeced. It didn’t. It kept the vast majority of the patents, which was the point of the whole exercise.

Two Different Kinds of Business Power

Broadly Mag frames them as parallel lives pulled by opposite instincts. Pichai spent twenty years climbing inside one company. Icahn never climbed anywhere. He bought his way in and made noise until somebody blinked. Where was Pichai in all this?

Google’s own blog called him Senior Vice President, Chrome, that May. The merger filing names Page, Rubin, Nikesh Arora, and David Drummond. Not him. Alphabet’s April 2026 proxy statement lists him as chief executive of both companies, but that’s fifteen years away.

The Men Behind the Job Titles

Nothing rattles Pichai. A TIME profile starts with him scuba diving off Hawaii in rough water, kicking down a few feet and finding what he calls the calmest place in the world. That’s a good summary of him.  He declared Google an “AI-first company” in 2016 when half the executives in the room thought he’d lost it. Backed custom TPU chips.

And when Demis Hassabis pushed for years to spin DeepMind out on its own, Pichai said no. Page was happy to let it go. Pichai wasn’t. Icahn’s the reverse on every count. Loud, blunt, and quick to sue. As per Celeb Talk, he married Liba Trejbal in 1979, divorced in 1999, married Gail Golden that same year, and separated in 2025. Two children, Brett and Michelle. Signed the Giving Pledge in 2010.

Put his name on the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a genomics lab at Princeton. Served as Donald Trump’s special adviser on regulatory reform for seven months in 2017 before leaving the role.

Where Sundar Pichai and Carl Icahn stand in 2026

Alphabet went past $4 trillion in market value in January 2026 and cleared $400 billion in annual revenue. Gemini 3 was launched in November. Pichai himself was worth about $1.6bn in early 2026, which sounds modest for a man running all that, but he’s staff, not a founder. Icahn’s gone the other way entirely. Hindenburg Research claimed in May 2023 that Icahn Enterprises was overvalued and its payouts “Ponzi-like”.

Units dropped 20% that day and are down 86% since. The annual distribution got slashed from $8 to $2. His funds lost 18.2% in the first half of 2026. Forbes reported he’s dropped off the Forbes 400 with $4.2bn, short of the cut-off by roughly $200m, after 39 years on the list. He’s not gone quiet, though. He’s currently scrapping over Silver Lake’s $13bn Endeavour takeover. And his latest 13F, covering holdings to 30 June 2026, shows no Alphabet position whatsoever.

FAQs

Have Sundar Pichai and Carl Icahn ever met?

Ans: Nothing on record. Their names only sit together because both hovered around the 2011 Motorola deal, from opposite sides of it.

Who really led Google’s Motorola buy?

Ans: Larry Page was chief executive; Andy Rubin opened the talks. Pichai was busy with Chrome and isn’t named in the merger account at all.

How big was Icahn’s Motorola stake?

Ans: Around 11% of the common stock in July 2011. Big enough that the board picked up when he rang.

Does Icahn own Alphabet shares today?

Ans: His June 2026 filing shows none. The form does have blind spots, but there’s no reportable Alphabet position in it.

What’s Sundar Pichai worth?

Ans: About $1.6bn in early 2026, nearly all of it Alphabet share awards rather than founder stock.

Why did Icahn fall off the Forbes 400?

Ans: Years of duff bets, a massive short against the market, then the 2023 Hindenburg report. His $4.2bn just missed the 2026 cut.
